History of Careem
Mudassir Sheikha and Magnus Olsson, both management consultants at McKinsey & Company, established Careem.
It began operations in July 2012 as a website-based service for corporate car bookings and has now expanded into a ridesharing firm with daily car rentals.
Careem bought a Saudi home service firm and also began operations in Palestine in June 2017.
They were the first ride-hailing service to operate in Baghdad and maintain offices in Najaf and Erbil, Kurdistan Region.
Careem announced in August 2018 that they will be initiating bus services, beginning with Egyptian cities.
The service was terminated at the beginning of 2020. In 2019, it acquired a UAE-based bike-sharing firm cycle, which would rebrand as Careem Bike.
Careem Pay, a digital wallet for money transfers and withdrawals in the UAE, was introduced in April 2021.
The brand ceased meal delivery service in Pakistan in June 2022 due to bad economic conditions.
